ABOUT Double Disc Grinding
Technology: Double Disc Grinding Services are material removal services which use parallel, counter-rotating grinding surfaces to finish both sides of flat machined or cast pieces simultaneously. The process promotes a high degree of parallelism between the major part faces. Double disc grinding machines are available as horizontal and vertical types.
Parts can be ground using feed through, rotary, or reciprocating/oscillating techniques. Reciprocating grinding on double disc machines passes the part into and out from between the wheels along a straight path. Oscillating grinding on double disc machines passes parts along a circular path. Reciprocating/oscillating grinding can make one or multiple passes. Feed through grinding generally passes parts back to back one time through the wheels while supporting the parts on tracks. The parts are often driven through the grinding wheels with belts, etc. The grinding wheels can be canted to produce a heavy stock removal upon entry, known as shear grinding, or they can be set to produce a more uniform stock removal as the parts progress between them. Rotary feeding uses a circular carrier to pass the parts between the grinding disc faces and is recommended for small to medium sized parts.
Double disc grinding is particularly suited to finishing disc brake rotors and similarly shaped work pieces.
Advantages: Double disc grinding services offer higher throughput rates than single face grinding
Suitable for autofeeding and continuous grinding of parts
Stress is balanced on both sides of the part
Good for high production volumes
Suitable for small to large parts
Superior flatness tolerance over plane surface and cylindrical grinding
Limitations of Double Disc Grinding Services
Heavy material removal generates significant heat which can be difficult to remove with coolant
Uses the face of the grinding wheel rather than the rim, makes dressing tricky and setup critical
Setup complexity makes it impractical for low production runs
Applications: Double disc grinding services are used extensively by automakers due to their high production rate capabilities.
