ABOUT Cylindrical Grinding
Technology: Cylindrical Grinding Services are materials removal services which encompass three grinding methods: outside diameter, inside diameter, and centerless. All of these methods rely on a turning workpiece and a turning grinding wheel. Cylindrical grinding is able to impart close tolerance finishes to all manner of cylindrical and circular items, including cam shafts, cylinders, crankshafts, etc. Cylindrical grinding can remove material from hardened surfaces such as bearing journals.
Outside diameter, or OD, grinding mounts the work between spindles so that it can rotate. The grinding wheel, also rotating, is then moved up against the spinning workpiece. It can traverse the length of the work.
Inside diameter, or ID, grinding mounts the work in a collet so the open end can be approached with the grinding wheel.
Centerless grinding dispenses with workpiece mounting and instead supports the work between a grinding wheel and a regulating wheel and a stationary rest. The regulating wheel is sometimes canted to allow for through feed grinding, where cylindrical parts are automatically advanced past the grinding wheel. In radial feeding, the regulating wheel is parallel to the grinding wheel.
Advantages: Grinding can produce tighter tolerances of cylindrical surfaces than can be done through turning and often it is a performed subsequently to turning for precision cylindrical parts.
Grinding can shape metals that are difficult to machine: tungsten, titanium, molybdenum, etc.
Swiss style centerless grinding is capable of producing difficult to machine very small parts, such as nitinol needles
Crush dressing of wheels can be used to profile final grind shapes
High precision
Limitations of Cylindrical Grinding Services
Grinding wheels must be stored and handled with care lest they be damaged and break during operation
Work pieces must be round for centerless grinding, no flats or other features common to machined shafts.
Applications: Cylindrical grinding services are used in producing a variety of cylindrical machine parts, such as
