Cold Heading
ABOUT Cold Heading
Technology: Cold Heading Services are metal forming services used to produce cold head parts such as screws, bolts, etc. It is a cold working process that imparts strength to components better than machining processes. Cold heading uses a combination of processes including cutting, extrusions, and upsetting, often with multiple strikes for complex parts. The process works with aluminum, brass, and a range of low and high carbon steels, along with a variety of exotic metals.

Advantages: Cold heading services provide economical methods of producing large lots of small parts with good metallurgical characteristics
  • Cold working does not disturb the grain structure of the original material as machining does
  • Waste is minimal compared with machining
  • High capacity production, with piece rates measured in the hundreds of parts per minute

    Limitation of Cold Heading Services
  • Wire size diameter that can be formed by heading has an upper limit of about 3/4 inch
  • Tooling requirements limit the process to medium and high volume runs

Applications: Cold heading services apply forming a variety of parts whose heads are typically much larger than their shanks, such as
  • Bolts
  • Screws
  • Rivets
  • Studs
  • Cold Forming Cold Heading Forging
