ABOUT Forging and Forming Services
Forging and Forming Services are metalworking operations which include cold and hot working processes for steel and other metals. Forging and forming involves repeated or singular blows with forging or forming tools, often against a hardened anvil or die. The process is used to make parts that require the strength imparted through working. In forging and forming, metal undergoes changes to its grain structure through the deformations process, resulting in grain alignments that are difficult to achieve through other shaping processes such as machining. Forged parts generally exhibit superior strength compared with castings.
Very large forgings are made on presses that provide forces upwards of 50,000 tons. Smaller parts needing high strength such as hand tools and wrenches are also forged. Forging itself is a very old process done at one time with forge, hammer, and anvil.
Cold forming processes rely on pressure alone to shape metals, and includes specialized processes such as coining and swaging. Cold heading is a cold forming process used to make threaded fasteners and similar forms from wire stock. Cold heading is characterized as being a high volume, tight tolerance process. It is capable of very high production rates.
Forging is a hot or cold working process that uses hammers or dies to shape metal parts.
Cold Forming fashions high strength metal parts by cold temperature deformation alone.
Cold Heading is a metal deformation process used to make high strength headed fasteners and the like.
