Plastic Extrusion
ABOUT Plastic Extrusion
Technology: Plastic Extrusion Services are plastics forming services use to create plastic profiles and the like from a variety of materials using heat and pressure to force them through extruding dies. Extrusion can produce continuous lengths of two dimensional profiles and is thus suited to the production of plastic trim parts, railings, tubes, etc.

Plastics extrusion is a similar process to plastic injection molding where plastic pellets are fed into a screw feed extruder barrel where they are plasticized and injected through a profile die. Extrusion is a continuous process, however, used to make lengths rather than discrete parts as with injection molding.

Advantages: Plastic extrusion services can be used to produce products that are virtually unlimited in length.
  • Can often substitute for metal profile extrusions in non-load-bearing applications
  • Extrusion providers often carry standard profiles and already have the extruder machinery
  • Lower tooling costs compared to metal extruding

    Limitations of Plastic Extrusion Services
  • Cross sections need to be generally uniform in thickness
  • Extrusions can expand after leaving the die, making dimension control difficult

Applications: Plastic extrusion services readily produce lengthy profiles often with complex cross sections that can be found in a variety of applications, including
  • Architectural details
  • Automotive/aerospace trim
  • PVC piping
