ABOUT Metal Extrusion
Technology: Metal Extrusion Services are metal forming services which use force to form soft metal billets into longer, thinner, sometimes tubular products such as aluminum beer cans and toothpaste tubes. Metal extrusion has several variants including impact extrusion, hot and cold extrusion, etc. Metal extrusion is considered a high volume production process. Many standard channels, angles, etc. are formed by metal extruding, including complex profiles such as those used for building aluminum framed barriers, partitions, window walls, etc. Produces strong components through grain alignmentNo flash or mold residue to be removedMetal extrusion services often produce standard profiles and can use existing extrusion presses for custom profiles
The hot metal extrusion process uses heat to soften metals before pushing them through extrusion dies, where short, stubby billets are lengthened and narrowed. Cold extrusion dispenses with the softening step and can produce items with high strength due to the cold working process. Hot extrusion is generally faster than cold extrusion. Cold extrusion is harder on dies due to the immense forces involved in pushing room temperature materials through steel dies.
Advantages: Metal extrusion services can often produce parts faster than might be produced through ordinary machining.
Limitations of Metal Extrusion ServicesUsed mainly for soft metalsLower tolerance capabilities than machining
Applications: Metal extrusion services can be used to create lengths of profiles in solid and hollow forms.Aircraft partsAutomotive window and sunroof tracksArchitectural partitions and frames
