Drafting Services
ABOUT Drafting Services
Technology: Drafting Services are a range of drawing and conversion services centered mainly around the two dimensional drawing of fabrication and shop drawings, detailing, patent drawings, technical illustrating, etc. Many firms that engage in drafting work offer the services as an adjunct to other engineering services such as 3D modeling and computer assisted engineering. Drafting services are usually provided that conform to a standard such as ASME Y14.5 for geometrical design and tolerancing. Many firms offer conversion to CAD from paper documents.

Drafting services have their roots in drawings on paper, though very little drafting is done that way today. Two dimensional drawing on a computer varies very little from the 2D drawings of yore. Some drafting services firms can still produce working drawings from engineers' sketches.

Advantages: Drafting services offer a flexible approach to meeting project deadlines without hiring additional full-time staff.
  • Rates can vary based on the technical nature of the project from simple drawing revisions on up
  • Drawing conversions to CAD are usually price tiered depending on the use of the final CAD drawing

    Limitations of Drafting Services
  • May not always have the same personnel to assign to a project
  • Not much say in which employees do the work

Applications: Drafting services are routinely used in a number of industries.
  • Process piping
  • Patents
  • Structural steel
  • Technical illustrations
