ABOUT Shell Mold Casting Services
Technology: Shell Mold Casting Services are metal molding operations that produce metal forms using techniques that are similar to sand casting with several exceptions. Shell form casting uses a reusable pattern around which a layer of sand and resin is deposited. This form is combined with a mating half in a flask where the sides are buttressed with additional sand or shot. Molten metal is poured into the mold, much like with sand casting. Capable of producing parts with thinner walls than sand castingGood for lightweight castings where dimensional control is importantGood for steel castings weighing under 20 lbs.Better tooling life than die casting dies
Shell Mold casting produces better finishes than ordinary sand casting. The shells are made in a hot box, where the pattern is heated and the sand and resin dumped over it. Heat cures the resin, making for a very durable mold half.
Advantages: Shell mold casting lends itself to automated processing.
Shell Mold Casting Limitations Generally more expensive than sand casting or forging, but costs can be saved through minimal post cast machiningMolds are less porous than sand molds, so gases must be managedPatterns must be heated to cure shell resins, so metal patterns usually required
Applications: Shell mold casting is used to make complex parts with higher surface finishes than achievable through sand casting. Connecting rodsGear housingsCylinder heads
