Metal Spinning
ABOUT Metal Spinning
Technology: Metal Spinning Services are manufacturing services that produce three dimensional symmetrical parts from flat circles of metal. Metal spinning provides an economical alternative to stamping, casting and many other metal forming processes. The process involves a disc of usually soft metal such as aluminum that is mounted to a wood or metal mandrel. This assembly is rotated on a lathe like machine and forming tools push the disc onto the mandrel shape to produce a finished part. The forming tools can be manually, pneumatically, or hydraulically powered.

Advantages: Metal spinning services offer an economical method of producing prototypes, while advances in CNC spinning technologies have made it viable for production volumes as well.
  • Low cost tooling compared to stamping
  • Changes are easy to incorporate during production
  • Low scrap rates
  • Cold working of material improves characteristics

    Limitations of Metal Spinning Services
  • Applies only to concentric parts
  • Difficult to hold tight thickness tolerances

Applications: Metal spinning services are used to make a variety of hollow, symmetrical pieces.
